[00:00:06] Good morning. If I've not had the chance to meet you, my name is Michael Fueling. I'm the lead pastor here. If you'd open up your Bibles with me, we're gonna be in Joshua Chapter two this morning. To start us off, I'd love to ask you a pretty invasive question.
[00:00:22] What irrational fears do you have?
[00:00:28] What irrational fears do you have?
[00:00:32] You probably know the irrational fears of your spouse, of your children. Okay, some of you might leave, and that's okay. This will be over shortly. You can come back in.
[00:00:42] Raise your hand if you have an irrational fear of mice.
[00:00:47] Some of you. Right. Okay, jury's out. Is this a gerbil, a hamster, a mouse? Some of you probably know. But I figured I'd be nice, and I found the cutest thing that I could find that was even in the of the proximity of a mouse. Okay, probably if you're petrified of mice, you probably, like, in the moment, can't find what you're actually afraid of. So let me tell you what you probably should be afraid of when it comes to mice. It's called the hantavirus. Okay? You don't want the hantavirus, by the way.
[00:01:16] People die from the hantavirus.
[00:01:19] 20, 24. Do you know how many cases in the United States of hantavirus there were?
[00:01:24] 20.
[00:01:25] And do you know how many cases there were in 2025? A whopping 40. Which means.000012% of the United States population contracted hantavirus. In other words, you are seven times more likely to get struck by lightning than you are the hantavirus. So let me just ask you, like, what are you afraid of?
[00:01:51] Really? Here's like, a pro tip for you. If you're gonna, like, somehow, like, blow out your garage or your shed, and it's got, like, the possibility of mouse poop on it, like, put a good mask on and, like, you're gonna probably be just fine. All right, who has an irrational fear of spiders again? I'm trying to find the cutest pictures I can possibly find. Guys, I'm trying to throw you a bone here. Like, okay, have you ever heard of a story of someone dying in the state of Illinois from a spider bite?
[00:02:28] 99.9% of you probably haven't. You know why? Because I couldn't find one single reported death of a spider bite in the state of Illinois.
[00:02:35] Now you might be thinking, but, Pastor Michael, what about the black widow? And I would say, guess what? A study was done. 15,000 cases of black widow bites how many deaths?
[00:02:47] Zero. But pastor Michael, what about the brown recluse spider? Okay, I want you to hear me. You are two and a half times more likely, okay, to have a fatal interaction with Bubbles than you are a brown recluse spider. Okay?
[00:03:09] You are four and a half times more likely to to have to call an emergency like something over glow sticks than you are the black widow spider. And we're all like glow sticks. Put them on our neck chemicals, no big deal. Glows in the dark. Must be totally safe, right? Like, if anything glows in the dark in a cartoon, is it safe?
[00:03:26] Probably not. Yeah. We do this around our neck. We're like black widows. Oh my gosh. Like again, don't be a fool. If you see a black widow, don't go play with it. Okay? Statistically your chances go up if you start antagonizing brown reckless spiders or black widows. Okay, snakes. Who has an irrational fear of snakes? I'm doing my best. I'm trying to not have people walk out or pass out. Okay, did you know, okay, that there has not been one venomous snake seen in the wild in the Chicagoland area since 2009?
[00:04:02] Not one. Like there's a 99.99999% chance that if you come across a snake, it is gonna be non venomous. Okay, let's just take a moment and let's put fear kind of in its rightful place. Okay?
[00:04:17] Four facts about fear. Number one, fear is a good gift from God. Amen. Like, fear is an intentional alarm system designed by God to protect you and I from real danger.
[00:04:28] Number two, fear is one of the most strongest motivators. God uses fear. Moses uses fear, Jesus uses fear, the apostles use fear. And everybody who's ever raised a strong willed child, what do you use?
[00:04:40] So help me God. Okay, number three, we can appropriately and should fear good things. We can rightly fear God. We can rightly and appropriately fear the God ordained authorities that he has put over us in our life. We should rightly fear consequences from God ordained authorities if we are going to be foolish and stupid. Fear isn't bad as long as fear isn't in control. But number four, fear is one of the most easily hijacked emotions.
[00:05:10] Do you know what fear does not love?
[00:05:13] Facts.
[00:05:15] Like facts don't have this ability, it seems for most people's deep rooted fears to actually change them. In fact, once your body internalizes something as deathly dangerous, like it doesn't matter how many facts you tell your brain, your body is still gonna have a physiological Reaction to mice or spiders or snakes. And this is interesting because one of the most easily high hijacked emotions is gonna be fear. And this is what, by the way, people who are really smart in news do, they try to make you afraid of people where the data does not actually objectively show that you should be afraid of them. They want you to be afraid of things that the data doesn't objectively show that you should be afraid of. Now, are there some people and things that we should be afraid of? For sure. But I wanna make sure that I'm not just being hijacked emotionally, but I'm rooting my fear and measurable data that I can prove and is objective. And the demonic realm loves to take fear to hijack it. Because if a demon can afraid of something more than God, they can get you to do anything.
[00:06:12] Now, with this context, Joshua, chapter two. We're gonna start in verse one. We're gonna meet a prostitute named Rahab and then two unnamed spies. We'll start in verse one. Joshua, the son of nun, sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, go view the land, especially Jericho. Okay, so to understand the significance of these two spies, we we need to remember that this is not the first time Israel's leaders have sent spies into the land. This is at least the second time.
[00:06:45] About 40 years prior, 12 spies were sent in. Joshua and Caleb were two of them. And 40 years prior, these OG spies, the originals, they came back and they gave a fearful report of the land. There's too many people. There are giants on the land. There's no way we can do this. They're bigger, they're stronger, and the list goes on and on. And here's what they did. And with this fearful report, they hijacked Israel's fear. And they made all of Israel more afraid of the giants in the land and of the armies in the land than they were of Yahweh, who with a word creates matter and oversees all of creation.
[00:07:24] And so somehow these 10 fearful spies came back and gave a report that made everyone more afraid of these armies than they were of the God, of kings, of lords, and of all of creation.
[00:07:37] But this time, we fast forward 40 years, we got two spies coming in and they have a very different spirit. They have a spirit of faith and not a spirit of fear. Verse one continues. They the two spies, they went and they came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and they lodged there. So 3,200 years after the events today, I have some questions. Two of them specifically, number one, like, okay, where is Jericho? Can you help me understand the geography? So here's a picture I wanna show you to kind of give you an insight into the terrain in the distance. And so you have the Jordan river, and to the right is Shittim. And this is where the Israelites are camped. To the west of the Jordan river, you have Jericho. It's gonna be about five to six miles inland. And here's what this river demarcates. It demarcates to the right, not the promised land to the left. You're now in the promised land, okay? And so the moment they cross, they are going into territory that God has set apart for the people of Israel. Now, what's interesting is that this location on the east side, Shittim, actually is a pretty emotional historical place for the Israelites. Go back roughly 40 years and listen to what numbers Chapter 25 says about this place.
[00:08:51] Says while Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. And this brings me to my second question. Why did these two spies go into the house of a prostitute in Jericho? And there are two primary options here. Option number one, these spies are shady fellows. Okay, let's look back at verse one again. There's two words came and lodged there in the Hebrew.
[00:09:18] These are two words that are loaded with sexual innuendo. And here's what the author is doing. The author is teasing you, the reader. Because imagine you're reading this for the first time. You know, numbers 25. You know what happened last time they were in Shittim. You know what happened the last time. So now you're wondering, like, okay, wow, these spies, they go into the house of a prostitute. And the author's sort of leaving you with a little bit of tension here. And here's the questions that you're gonna be wondering as you read. Would these spies do the evil things that their parents did when. When they get into the promised land? Would these spies be lured by the evil of Canaan, or would they be faithful to Yahweh?
[00:10:01] The second option about why they stayed with a prostitute, I think is a lot more logical. And that would be very simply that it would be one of the few places that you could go where you could kind of hide and you'd be welcomed in.
[00:10:13] So verse two, we see that the king of Jericho, he also has spies, by the way, everywhere.
[00:10:18] And it was told, the king of Jericho, behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land. So the king of Jericho Sent to Rahab. Here's what he says. Bring out the men who have come to you who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land. And you need to know this. It was not a mystery that Israel was on the other side of the Jordan river. In Shittim, this was public. It's not like they couldn't figure out where they were at. And here's something that you kind of need to know. You'll see this as the story unfolds, but it's very important.
[00:10:49] Yahweh's reputation has preceded these spies.
[00:10:53] The king of Jericho and all of those who live in his kingdom are deathly afraid of Yahweh and Israel.
[00:11:03] Verse 4. Rahab, she engages what let's call this God glorifying deception. Okay, this will be fun.
[00:11:10] But the woman Rahab had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said to the king's men, true, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. Is that a true statement?
[00:11:24] Nope, not at all.
[00:11:26] I find it fascinating that multiple people in scripture are applauded by God, it would seem, for explicit and intentional deception. For example, Rahab deceives the king. Hebrew midwives deceive Pharaoh. Michael deceives King Saul's messengers to protect David. Hushai misleads Absalom to protect David. And here's what we see in scripture. It is dishonorable, lest some of you kids are thinking, oh, I get to deceive my parents, right? It is 99.9% of the time it is dishonorable to deceive the people in your life, especially the God ordained authorities he's put in your life. But scripture does give an exception. And I think Christians over the last 2000 years have been very grateful for this exception when they have been running for their lives and hiding from people who wanna murder them.
[00:12:16] And so there seems to be this exception that it is actually honorable when you are protecting innocent people from murder and execution, from immoral evil people and government authorities, and that there seems to be this principle. So like we go back to World War II, if a Nazi guard came to your house and said, are there Jews in this house?
[00:12:37] Now if you're like a rule keeper and you're like, I could never break a rule, you may be like, yeah, they're in the basement, right? But here what we see is that, no, it is actually more honorable to protect innocent people from evil people who intend murder and harm. And so this is one of these, like principles that I think gives Christians in these extreme situations and in wartime scenarios freedom to do what is actually good and moral and best, which is to protect evil people from being unjustly murdered, good people from being unjustly murdered by evil people.
[00:13:09] God honored her so much. So I want you to listen to Hebrews, chapter 11, verse 31. This is the hall of faith.
[00:13:14] The people in the Old Testament, like God just puts up, it says, these are people who exemplify faith. He says, by faith. Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies. Do you think the friendly welcome was just a, hey, come on in. Like the friendly welcome was the protection. It was the deception. It was the hiding.
[00:13:36] Verse 5. Rahab's deception continues. She says, and when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. False.
[00:13:45] I do not know where the men went. False. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them. False.
[00:13:51] But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. In verse seven, the king's men bought the lie. So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan and as far as the fords, and the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out.
[00:14:09] Verse 8. What happens now is we get insight into the conversation that happened between Rahab and the two spies. And there is, I think, an incredible challenge for those of us who might find ourselves in situations where we are petrified to do what we know the Lord has called us to do. Verse 8.
[00:14:28] Before the men, the two spies lay down, she, Rahab, came up to them on the roof and said to the men, I know that the Lord has given you the land. Well, you see three things. Number one, Rahab uses God's personal name, Yahweh, whenever you see Lord in all caps. That is the English translation's way of telling you that this is the personal name of God, Yahweh. Number two, Rahab has heard and believed in God's promises. She starts off and she says, I know.
[00:15:07] She knows that the outcome of this inevitable war will be for the good of Israel. She knows and notice. Number three, Rahab's fear of God is far greater than her fear of the king of. Of Jericho.
[00:15:24] Rahab continues talking and she reveals something. I think that's amazing. In verse nine, she says, and that the fear of you, Israel, has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land, they melt away before you. I Need you to hold this phrase in your brain because we're going to come back to it. All the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.
[00:15:47] Verse 10. Rahab goes on. We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt. How many years ago Was that? Like 40 years ago? She is referencing a fear that goes back 40 years and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who are beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, by the way, Og, who was likely a giant whom you devoted to destruction. Verse 11. As soon as we heard it, here it is again.
[00:16:21] Our hearts melted and there was no spirit left in any man because of you.
[00:16:31] I want to just briefly take you back 40 years to Exodus chapter 23.
[00:16:37] And Exodus 23 was written to the parents and grandparents of this generation that's about to go into the promised land. It's written to the wilderness generation, and it's written to them to dispel fear. Listen, I'm gonna send you into this land. It's gonna be scary. It's gonna be giants, it's gonna be fortifications. But you don't need to be afraid because. And then here is what he says. I'm gonna read some of this, and there's one verse I'll put on the screen for you, but I'm gonna pick selections from Exodus 23. Between verses 20 and 33. Forty years prior, God says this. Behold, I send an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I've prepared, the promised land over the Jordan.
[00:17:16] But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.
[00:17:26] He says, when my angel goes before you and brings you to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. Oh, my. And I will blot them out.
[00:17:36] Now look at verse 27. I will send my terror before you and will throw into confusion all the people against whom you shall come. And I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you. By the way, it's a lot easier to kill somebody when their back is turned to you.
[00:17:51] And I will send hornets before you and shall drive out the Hivites and the Canaanites and the Hittites before you.
[00:17:59] Then, after receiving this promise, Joshua, Caleb, 10 other spies, they go into the land. And do you know the irony of the faithless report of the 10 spies. Here's the irony.
[00:18:12] While they're petrified of the giants in the land, what they don't know is that all the people in the land are far more petrified of them.
[00:18:24] Have you ever spent, like so much emotional real estate on fearing something, only to face it and realize that you wasted your energy?
[00:18:33] I sure have.
[00:18:35] Back to Joshua, chapter two, verse 11. Rahab, she's still talking, and she says, as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted and there was no spirit left in any man because of you. For the Lord, she uses his personal name again. Yahweh, the Lord your God. He is God in the heavens above and on the earth below. And it is right here that Rahab confesses her faith and her confidence in in Yahweh. Theologians identify this as her salvation moment. And she literally quotes Deuteronomy, chapter 4, verse 39. And if you're an Israelite reading this and you're familiar with Deuteronomy, you're asking yourself, how does she know God's word?
[00:19:20] And she backs up this declaration of faith by putting her life and her family's life at risk.
[00:19:27] Verse 12.
[00:19:29] It's actually a really special verse.
[00:19:31] It really does reveal her view of Yahweh.
[00:19:34] Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house and give me a sure sign that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death. And I love this in verse 14. And the men said to her, our life for yours, even to death.
[00:20:02] Okay, so what could possibly give these two spies the confidence to spare this sinful woman from death and then to bring her and her family into the nation of Israel? What could possibly give these two spies the confidence to offer asylum to a sex worker who, under Old Covenant law, I don't know, it's breaking a lot of them. And then to bring this sex worker who worships false demon gods, and to bring her into the nation of Israel with asylum. Two obvious facts that these men that gave these men confidence, in fact, number one, is this. These two spies, they knew firsthand Yahweh's forgiveness and mercy to anyone who abandons their false gods and gives their allegiance to him.
[00:20:55] You may not be aware of this, but when you think of the nation of Israel, we think mostly Jews. There were a lot of Jews, don't get me wrong. But the 12 tribes at this time were actually filled with a whole Bunch of people from different nations and who grew up worshiping different gods. In fact, you have a whole bunch of Egyptians that at the Passover, left Egypt and they devoted themselves to Yahweh, rejected Egypt's gods. Not only that, but we have a whole group of people, the Midianites, the Kenites, sojourners. Moses himself marries a woman who is not by nature an Israelite. Her name is Zipporah. And here's what these spies know.
[00:21:31] They know that in Israel Yahweh offers asylum to people who repent of their foreign gods and give their allegiance to him.
[00:21:41] Fact number two, these spies, they saw in Rahab real, genuine faith. Listen to how James 2:25 says this in the same way. Was not also Rahab the prostitute justified or proven by her works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? Let me just pause for a moment and say these two facts.
[00:22:05] Their personal knowledge of God's kindness and forgiveness and their ability to see real, genuine faith in somebody. These are the same two foundations that allow you and me. When somebody who has lived an objectively sinful, terrible life says, I want to come to faith in God, I believe in Jesus. It gives us the same confidence to look at them and say, listen, here's what I know.
[00:22:30] I know my God is in the business of saving sinners because he saved me.
[00:22:35] And I know this, that when there is genuine faith that God's promise is absolutely I'll give you spiritual asylum and I will bring you into my family and bring you into my kingdom. And this is why you and me, who are believers in Jesus Christ, we are authorized and can look at somebody who is shown to be genuinely wanting to shift their allegiance from whatever false God they're worshiping to the true God Jesus Christ. And we can look at them just like the spies can look at Rahab and say, jesus welcomes you with complete forgiveness, open arms and a new start. Lest you think this is a New Testament thing, this has been a God thing from the very beginning.
[00:23:13] God has been taking broken sinners, rebelling against him, worshiping false gods and receiving them into his kingdom and adopting them into his people from the very beginning. Jesus is the same in the Old Testament as He is in the New Testament, as He is today, as he will be forever.
[00:23:32] Jesus has always welcomed sinners and invited them into his kingdom. We'll go to the end of the chapter. Verse 24 ends with faithful spies giving a faithful report. They said to Joshua, truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us. There's more to come on Rahab in a few chapters, but for now, I want to share with you two. So what's number one?
[00:24:02] The Bible screens this truth.
[00:24:05] God will not condemn someone who is willing to actually repent.
[00:24:11] Some form of this question is often posed by skeptics and those searching. It's a good question. It goes like this.
[00:24:18] Why would God condemn people who have never heard the gospel?
[00:24:22] And I want to poke at this because Rahab's story makes it clear that God will make sure that any willing person will receive either a messenger or the message. In fact, here's what we're learning over the last 50 years as testimonies from closed nations, especially Islamic countries, flood in. You've heard me talk about this, but I want to say it again and again. Do you know the most common way that Muslims in closed countries are hearing the gospel and coming to faith in Jesus Christ?
[00:24:52] Jesus visits them in a dream.
[00:24:55] And if Jesus can't identify or doesn't identify somebody in proximity, he will share the gospel with them. And then it is not uncommon that he'll be like, hey, I'm gonna tell you the way of life. There are two people over here. I want you to go find them. They'll tell you the message of salvation. It's striking. And that people who do not have, like, there's no access to get to them are hearing about the gospel and believing, and Muslims are coming to Christ in droves. And when you talk to people who come from that side of the world, like, 80% of the time, they're gonna tell you the same story. I had a dream. Isn't that crazy?
[00:25:26] I say this because I just. I need you to consider for a moment the lengths that God went to to bring Rahab a message. And the messengers, these two spies could have landed anywhere. And God brought them providentially to the house of the one woman in this place that would repent, actually.
[00:25:46] And we watch God go out of his way. And this isn't like a new thing. Like, you read the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and Abraham. I mean, he asked the question that I think is fair. He's like, God, there's gotta be righteous people in this city. And God's like, there's not. And he's like, 50? No. 40? No. 30? No. I mean, he goes down. And all of a sudden you get to this fundamental point. God's like, I'm not unjust in my judgment, but like, listen, Lot and his family, that's it.
[00:26:11] And so, like, I'm gonna get them out of there. But, like, I'm telling you that my judgment is just and right. Like, if there were people who were gonna repent, I would have brought other messengers for them. Like, they have everything they need.
[00:26:25] So I think we just need to give God the benefit of the doubt. Nineveh, this is another opportunity. God's gonna enact judgment on this nation, and he brings a messenger. And it seems the vast majority of Nineveh repents and God relents from his judgment.
[00:26:41] I'll just kind of say this as bluntly as I can, and I think some of you need to hear this. You will never find one single person in history who is judged inappropriately by Jesus.
[00:26:49] And you will never find one person in hell who would have given their life to Jesus if they just had more information.
[00:26:56] I want you to hear me also. You have no idea. None. Because you don't know, and neither do I. The personal and private that Jesus has revealed himself to people in tribes, to people in the rainforest, and more to ensure that any person who would believe would receive the message and the messenger. And I think as we just watch history unfold before us and we hear the stories of people from different tribes and places and the dreams and the things that are happening, like, I think we need to give our God a whole lot more.
[00:27:32] He is just, and he will not stand on the day of judgment and do something that makes Him a sinner and guilty. Our God is just in all of his ways, and all of his judgments are always right. And here's the deal. The problem is that more times than not, we just don't give him the benefit of the doubt. We put God on trial, and yet there are so many things we have no idea about. But here's what we know. We see this pattern in Scripture. God brings messengers to people who would believe. And I'm thankful for that.
[00:27:59] Number two, like Rahab, it's never too late to throw a rational fear in the garbage and to do the right thing.
[00:28:07] Rahab had a choice.
[00:28:09] Fear Jericho's king or fear Yahweh.
[00:28:13] And what I love about this is Rahab doesn't just fear Yahweh. She transfers her allegiance to Yahweh as her God.
[00:28:23] I don't know about you, but, like, there are probably some people here, and you might know in your head, maybe even in your heart, that Jesus is God.
[00:28:32] You might know that he is your creator, your desire that he loved you. That he died for you. You might know all of that, but you might be standing here petrified to give him your allegiance. And I just want to encourage you. Whatever person you're afraid to disappoint, whatever position or relationship or thought thing that you stand to lose, whatever behavior or habit that you are afraid to leave behind, whatever fear you need to face, here's my encouragement to you. Be a Rahab and fear God more, All the things other than God that you fear. And bend the knee to don't love you and cannot save you.
[00:29:17] You can be a slave to that which does not love you, or a slave to the God who designed you, made you, and loved you.
[00:29:26] No matter what, you're going to fear something. And my encouragement to you is to bend the knee to the God who loves you and made you and is offering you salvation. But Pastor Michael, what if I can't change? I mean, Rahab's testimony, It just reverberates through millennia.
[00:29:43] With God's help, even sex workers can stop and start over.
[00:29:49] It's a bold statement. And some of you are like. Like most of you are probably gonna think to yourself, I'm not as bad as that. Like, if she. If God can redeem this woman, okay, let's say you're worse than this.
[00:29:59] Fill in the blank.
[00:30:02] With God's help, even fill in the blank, can experience redemption.
[00:30:08] They can stop and they can start over.
[00:30:11] And so whatever your past, I think the beautiful news of the story of Rahab is that God can forgive your past.
[00:30:17] He can redeem your past.
[00:30:19] He can redeem your present.
[00:30:20] He can even redeem your future. Because this Canaanite false religion worshiping sex worker, theologians think she might even have been a brothel manager.
[00:30:32] Because this woman responded to faith in Yahweh.
[00:30:36] This woman, the sex worker, was forgiven, saved from death, saved her family, was made a legal Israelite, experienced a new life, and was privileged to become the great great grandmother of King David himself. And it didn't stop there. She became the great grandmother, 35 generations removed of Jesus himself.
[00:31:01] I'll tell you guys, I cannot think of a God that I would want to serve more. One who could redeem, forgive, and restore not just me, but the generations after me for coming to faith in Christ. And so if you have never done that, I offer you, in Jesus name, forgiveness. Not because of me or because you went to church or you gave some money, but because you believed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Are you willing to believe and to make Jesus your God? You? He is more than willing to forgive. Amenville Church. Amen. Let's pray. Father, thank you.
[00:31:34] Thank you for fear that leads to repentance.
[00:31:38] Thank you for faith like Rahab's.
[00:31:41] Thank you for the power of the gospel. Thank you for new starts. Thank you for kindness to sinners like us. Thank you that there is no sin that the blood of Jesus cannot cover and that there is no sinner. The holy Spirit cannot redeem or transform. And all of this only comes through faith in Christ.
